This was an excerpt from my daily devotional, Grace Mail, today. It really made me think about what impression I’ll leave on this Earth after I’m gone, but I don’t think about it nearly enough as I should:
“Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies—so the living should take this to heart … . A wise person thinks a lot about death, while a fool thinks only about having a good time.” Ecclesiastes 7:2, 4
This is a passage that I’ve used in just about every funeral I have conducted. It’s a clear call to think about where your life is headed and what kind of an impact you will have had while you lived.
The Bible doesn’t want you to walk around being morbid, but it does encourage you to think about what you’re doing, where you’re going, and to sober up and realize that you only have one shot to make a difference on this planet; and you only have one opportunity to make yourself ready for eternity.
Have you thought much about eternity? Are you sure that if you were to die today that you would have eternal life? If God were to ask you, “Why should I allow you to enter My Heaven?” – what would you say?
